Colm Murray – Award-Winning Broadcaster and Sports Commentator

A native of Moate, Colm Murray was a secondary school teacher before becoming a continuity announcer with RTE Radio in 1978. In 1983 he became a newscaster with the station and by 1988 had moved into the Sports Department.

For twenty five years he covered a wide array of sports for both radio and television ranging from horse-racing in Cheltenham to the Olympics and Paralympics in Sydney, Athens and Beijing and the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

He was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in 2010 and worked tirelessly to further medical research into this disease. He continued to work in the RTE newsroom and was an inspiration to many. Colm Murray died in July 2013.
